Current Class Activities & Assignments for APE Lit. (Periods 1, 3, 4, 6, & 7):

 

Monday, November 11, 2013:  Students completed multiple-choice practice and reviewed the previous week's practice answers.  Students received a new reading assignment (pages 33-the first half of 38) and the teacher reminded them that the Heart of Darkness study guide work for part one is due at the start of class tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, November 12, 2013:  Students completed a Heart of Darkness multiple-choice quiz (open-book).  Students and the teacher discussed the correct answers then continued reading Marlow's journey to the Inner Station.  Students are to read through the top of page 47 "Here. Give me some tobacco..." before returning to class tomorrow.

 

Wednesday, November 13, 2013:  Students received Part II Active Reading questions and worked in pairs to note mentions of Kurtz from the reading so far.  Students then looked at the details revealed about Kurtz so far.  Students are to finish reading Part II of Heart of Darkness and work on the Active Reading questions as homework.

 

Thursday, November 14, 2013:  Students worked on their Part II Active Reading questions. All work on those questions is due at the start of class tomorrow.

 

Friday, November 15, 2013:  Students turned in their Part II Active Reading work.  Students completed another round of multiple-choice practice and reviewed answers from the last practice.

 

Monday, November 18, 2013:  Students reviewed answers to the previous Monday's Multiple-Choice Practice, then received Part III study guide questions (first period has a different version from other classes').  Students are to finish reading Heart of Darkness and begin completion of the study guide, which is due at the start of class Wednesday.

 

Tuesday, November 19, 2013:  Students quietly reviewed then completed a reading quiz over Part III of Heart of Darkness.  Students had some time to work on their final study guides, and class ended with the beginning of a discussion of thematic thesis statements and how to organize an essay response to a prompt over a major literary work.  As homework, students are to complete the Part III study guide.

 

Wednesday, November 20, 2013:  Students worked on theme statement development and the teacher reviewed a suggested method of organizing and composing an essay response for a timed writing task over a major literary work.  As homework, students are to review for the Heart of Darkness tests.

 

Thursday, November 21, 2013:  Students completed a timed writing over Heart of Darkness as the essay portion of their test over the novella.  As homework, students are to remember to have mid-quarter progress reports signed by parents and returned to class, as well as their copies of Heart of Darkness--both are due tomorrow.

 

Friday, November 22, 2013:  Students completed an objective test over Heart of Darkness.  After the test, students received work over "The Hollow Men" and a Major Work Data Sheet for Heart of Darkness.  Both are to be turned in on Monday.  Students who wish to try for some bonus points may re-read Heart of Darkness over the upcoming break, then answer a few questions in a brief interview with the teacher.  This is the Heart of Darkness Challenge.  Bonus point maximum: 25.  Students who do not wish to partake of the challenge are to turn in their books on Monday as well.

 

Monday, November 25, 2013:  Students turned in work over "The Hollow Men" and most turned in their major works data sheets.  The teacher reminded students about the Heart of Darkness Challenge, and students then turned their attention toward reading and noting similarities of content and themes between four poems and Heart of Darkness.

 

Tuesday, November 26, 2013:  Three students attended class.  They were allowed to study, read, or complete other tasks in the classroom.

 

Monday, December 2, 2013:  Students completed a pre-reading activity for The Glass Menagerie.

 

Tuesday, December 3, 2013:  Students reviewed their scored timed writings over Heart of Darkness.  Students viewed introductory information about Tennessee Williams' life and career, as well as some information about the modernist techniques he used in writing The Glass Menagerie.  Students began reading the play, and are to have read through the first two scenes before returning to class tomorrow.

 

Wednesday, December 4, 2013:  Students read through scene three in class.  Some classes read part or all of scene four.  Students are to have read through the first four scenes of The Glass Menagerie before returning to class tomorrow.

 

Thursday, December 5, 2013:  Due to inclement weather conditions, the superintendent closed all schools in Fort Smith.

Monday, December 9, 2013:  Students received a study guide over The Glass Menagerie (a pdf file of the study guide has been added to the links above).  Answers to the study guide questions are due Wednesday.  The teacher discussed the plan to have only one timed writing over the play this week, on Wednesday.

 

Tuesday, December 10, 2013:  Students entered class and the teacher allowed time to work on the study guide questions, as well as offered a discussion of possible themes and symbols of the play.  Students are to  complete study guide work and prepare for the timed writing over The Glass Menagerie.

 

Wednesday, December 11, 2013:  Students turned in their study guide work and completed a timed essay response to a literary analysis prompt over The Glass Menagerie.

 

Thursday, December 12, 2013:  Students viewed their timed essay responses with the teacher, as well as their overall grades and attendance for the semester.  Students received Major Work Data Sheets to be completed for The Glass Menagerie.  Students are to have them turned in by next Tuesday.

 

Friday, December 13, 2013:  Students continued working on their Major Works Data Sheets over The Glass Menagerie and viewed the first part of the cinematic adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

 

Monday, December 16, 2013:  Students continued completion of Major Works Data Sheets and their study of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

 

Tuesday, December 17, 2013:  Students completed and turned in Major Works Data Sheets and finished viewing Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

 

Wednesday, December 18-Friday, December 20, 2013:  Students completed semester exams.
