Current Class Activities & Assignments for English III-A (Pds. 1, 2, & 3):

 

Monday, January 30, 2012:  Students entered class and completed a quiz over the Collection 4 historical background, as well as all slavery and Civil War literary readings.

 

Tuesday, January 31, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed biographical information about Mark Twain, then read "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."

 

Wednesday, February 1, 2012:  Students entered class and read "To Build a Fire," then completed a graphic organizer analyzing the causes and effects of the main character's decisions and their consequences.

 

Thursday, February 2, 2012:  Students entered class and read "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and then completed some work in their literature books.  After turning in that work, students began reading "A Wagner Matinee" independently.

 

Friday, February 3, 2012:  Students entered class and completed an anticipation guide for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and then began viewing a video as preparation for study of that novel.

 

Monday, February 6, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed the stories from Collection Four that have been completed in the past week, then viewed a video of "To Build a Fire."

 

Tuesday, February 7, 2012:  Students entered class, reviewed aspects of realism in the short fiction studied so far in Collection Four, and then began Willa Cather's " A Wagner Matinee."

 

Wednesday, February 8, 2012:  Students entered class and finished "A Wagner Matinee" and then reviewed for the second Collection Four quiz.  Students also finished studying irony in their reading of Chopin's "The Story of an Hour."

 

Thursday, February 9, 2012:  Students completed the second quiz from Collection Four, featuring realistic, regionalistic, and naturalistic short fiction.

 

Friday, February 10, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed the previous day's quiz results, and then began a thoughtful discussion about the controversy that surrounds the reading of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in schools.

 

Monday, February 13, 2012:  Inclement weather on this day resulted in numerous class interruptions through the morning, as well as high absenteeism, so the start of reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was postponed for one day and the present students attempted viewing a film that featured poetry and other literature from Collections Two and Three.

 

Tuesday, February 14, 2012:  Most classes were abbreviated in time due to the advisory schedule, but all classes completed an introduction and reading of Chapter One of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

 

Wednesday, February 15, 2012:  Students entered class and read Chapters Two-Three of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

 

Thursday, February 16, 2012:  Students read Chapters Four-Five of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

 

 

Current Class Activities & Assignments for APE Lit. (Pds. 4, 6, & 7):

 

Monday, January 30, 2012:  Students entered class, turned in the weekend SPLOTTS work, and then received reading schedules and copies of A Tale of Two Cities.  Students then completed pre-reading thematic free writing.  Students are to read according to the assigned schedule and complete the anaphora exercise (creative writing).

 

Tuesday, January 31, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed the first four chapters of the book, then the teacher gave suggestions of particular details the students should consider as they read two more chapters of A Tale of Two Cities as homework.

 

Wednesday, February 1, 2012:  Students entered class and first worked in pairs to complete reflective questions over the first book of ATo2C.  Students then worked independently on a close reading graphic organizer, and resumed reading chapters according to the assigned reading schedule. Students will turn in the graphic organizer tomorrow.

 

Thursday, February 2, 2012:  Students entered class and were greeted by a substitute, who took up their homework and then instructed them to use class time to independently read according to the assigned schedule.

 

Friday, February 3, 2012:  Students entered class and completed multiple-choice practice, then received reflective work to complete for assigned chapters of A Tale of Two Cities.

 

Monday, February 6, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed answers to the previous week's multiple-choice practice.  Students turned in reflective work and are to continue reading according to the assigned schedule.

 

Tuesday, February 7, 2012:  Students received new graphic organizers and reflective reading work.  Students are to read according to the assigned schedule.

 

Wednesday, February 8, 2012:  Students worked on written responses and completion of other tasks along with the reading of assigned pages.

 

Thursday, February 9, 2012:  Students entered class and turned reflective work and graphic organizers for the second half of Book the Second from A Tale of Two Cities.  Students are to begin reading chapters from Book the Third according to the assigned reading schedule.

 

Friday, February 10, 2012:  Students entered class, completed multiple-choice practice, and reviewed answers.  Students are to continue reading remaining chapters of the novel according to the assigned reading schedule.

 

Monday, February 13, 2012:  Afternoon classes were poorly attended due to an excessive number of exits from school through the day, so students mainly discussed the reading and continued working on new chapters according to the assigned reading schedule.

 

Tuesday, February 14, 2012:  Students entered class and completed a brief reading quiz.  Some thematic review began, as well as discussion and predictions about the conclusion of the novel.  Students are to read the final three chapters of the book as homework. 

 

Wednesday, February 15, 2012:  Students entered class and reviewed themes from the novel by way of re-considering material from the introductory activity (focused free-writing).  Each class did start with a brief reading quiz.  Students are to review themes and significant points of the novel as review for tomorrow's essay exam.

 

Thursday, February 16, 2012:  Students entered class and completed a timed essay over  A Tale of Two Cities.
