Current Class Activities & Assignments for English III-A (Pds. 1, 2, & 3):

 

Monday, October 10, 2011:  Students entered class and quickly got to work on a new word study lesson for the week, and completed revision of rough drafts.  Revision sheets were due at the end of class, and vocabulary exercises are to be completed as homework if students did not complete all of them during class.

 

Tuesday, October 11, 2011:  Students entered class and turned in vocabulary work that was due.  Students completed a journal entry, reviewed what run-on sentences and comma splices are and how to correct them, then created their final drafts of the autobiographical narrative essays.  All final copies are due by the start of class tomorrow.

 

Wednesday, October 12, 2011:  Students completed a book pass as a means of selecting books to read independently starting this Friday.

 

Thursday, October 13, 2011:  Students entered class and wrote a second journal entry, then turned in the weekly journal writings.  Students then were reminded that they must have a book selected for independent reading, and they must have the books with them when they enter class tomorrow.  Students then watched two introductory videos for The Crucible.

 

Friday, October 14, 2011:  Students entered class and studied quietly in preparation for the vocabulary quiz.  Students completed their vocabulary quizzes and had the remainder of the class period to read silently.

 

Monday, October 17, 2011:  Students entered class and received the new word study lesson for the week.  Students also viewed the remainder of an introductory video about the Salem witchcraft hysteria of 1692 for historical context before reading The Crucible.  All vocabulary exercises are due at the start of class tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, October 18, 2011:  Students entered class and received an anticipation guide with twelve statements on it.  Students indicated if they agreed or disagreed with each statement, then composed a journal entry about their opinions concerning ONE of the statements on the anticipation guide.  Students then began reading The Crucible, Act One, working through a character sheet as well.

Monday, October 10, 2011:  Students entered class and viewed the new schedule for the week (tests have been postponed one day each). The teacher reminded students SPLOTTS work will be due tomorrow.  Students then reviewed Friday's multiple-choice practice.  Remaining class time went to reviewing Chapter Two of Heart of Darkness and beginning a discussion of the early pages of Chapter Three. As homework, students are to finish reading Chapter Three and complete SPLOTTS work that is due tomorrow.

 

Tuesday, October 11, 2011:  Students entered class and reviewed SPLOTTS work from the previous week, adding to notes.  Students then turned in SPLOTTS work and completed a quick review of Chapter Three of Heart of Darkness.  Students then looked at a review video for the novella, taking notes as they watched.  Students are to review the novella as preparation for tomorrow's timed essay exam, and the objective test that will take place during class on Thursday.

 

Wednesday, October 12, 2011:  Students completed a timed essay writing task over Heart of Darkness.

 

Thursday, October 13, 2011:  Students completed an objective test over Heart of Darkness.  Students then read Chapter 13 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, and have the Chapter 13 reflective prompt to compose a response to as homework.

 

Friday, October 14, 2011:  Students entered class and were reminded about their HTRLLAP responses that are due Monday, and SPLOTTS work that will be due Tuesday.  Students completed a round of multiple-choice practice, and then had time to read HTRLLAP and work on reflective responses.

 

Monday, October 17, 2011:  Students entered class and reviewed their performance on the Heart of Darkness assessments.  Students then reviewed answers to the weekly multiple-choice practice from Friday.  Students are to complete the weekly SPLOTTS work as homework.

 

Tuesday, October 18, 2011:  Students entered class and turned in their weekly SPLOTTS work.  Students then shifted their attention to the announcement of the Heart of Darkness project (a brief overview has been linked above).  Students then read "The Hollow Men."  As homework, students are to begin working on their ideas for the project, and complete all work on "The Hollow Men" worksheets.
